Under the LERTA — Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance Program – work done in the downtown commercial district along Front Street, between Conestoga Street to Strawberry Alley and in the 100 block of Adams Street, is eligible for 10 years of property tax relief.

New construction or renovation done elsewhere in the borough is eligible for reduced property taxes over nine years. Under the plan, property outside the commercial zone can receive 100 percent abatement for the first five years, 80 percent in year six; 60 percent in year 7; 40 percent in year 8; and a 20 percent break in year nine before paying the full amount on improved properties in year 10.

Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health awarded KW Ventures Holdings LLC operating as Firefly Dispensaries a permit to operate a medical cannabis dispensary in Steelton Borough. Firefly was the only awardee in Dauphin County and only one of four dispensaries awarded a permit in the South-Central Region.

Firefly will build a brand new state-of-the-art facility at 801 South Front Street which will serve as its flagship location.

Firefly is working closely with Steelton Borough and Police Chief Minium to coordinate development of the dispensary to maximize security and community benefit.

Steelton Borough congratulates Firefly and welcomes Jonathan Gusdorff and the team to our town. We are looking forward to a top-notch facility and business. Thank you for your commitment to Steelton Borough.

Steelton Borough is proud to welcome a new member to the Adopt-A-Block family. Promise Place has adopted the 300 block of South Second Street from Chestnut to Mohn. Send a thanks to Promise Place for doing their part in keeping Steelton clean.

Steelton Borough honored the community’s first-ever Adopt-A-Block Program participants at the February 6th Borough Council meeting.

On December 19th, Steelton Borough Council passed Ordinance 2016-06 providing for the establishment of medical-cannabis-based businesses in the Borough’s commercial and industrial districts under Pennsylvania’s recently enacted Medical Marijuana Act (Act 16 of 2016).

The Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Act is one of the strictest medical-marijuana laws in the nation. The Act authorizes the establishment of the medical cannabis industry in the Commonwealth under strongly regulated conditions. All grower-processors and medical cannabis dispensaries must be licensed by the PA Department of Health after a rigorous application process and must follow strict guidelines in their operations.

There are many questions about medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, including delivery methods that are permissible under the law.

Ordinance 2016-06 is based on a model ordinance developed by the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and provides guidelines/regulations for the establishment and operations of medical-cannabis based businesses that fit within the strict guidelines of the state law. Zoning requirements under Ordinance 2016-06 include:

• Mandatory setbacks/distances from public and private schools and daycares;
• Mandatory buffering requirements
• Mandatory security requirements
• Mandatory light-control requirements

The cannabis Industry is a $7.1 billion industry that is growing as the health and economic benefits of the medical cannabis industry continue to be realized. With the passing of Ordinance 2016-06, Steelton Borough will be at the forefront of the emerging industry and will be ready to welcome medical-cannabis-based businesses that establish themselves within the guidelines provided in the ordinance.

This one-of-a-kind park will provide a place for local youth to skate while also attracting visitors to the Borough for tournaments, camps, and other events. Funded in large part by a Dauphin County Tourism Grant, Steelton Skate Park will be the only park of its kind in Dauphin County and the surrounding area, drawing skateboarders and action sports enthusiasts from the region for tournaments, demos, events, and camps. It will also serve as a hub for local skateboarders (a growing demographic in the Borough) and fits into the larger revitalization of Municipal Park as a recreational and cultural hub.

The park is currently in the final design phase (approved by Steelton Borough Council at the November 7th meeting). Its design draws heavily from input by leaders in the local skateboarding community. The Borough is also partnering with local business and organizations to develop youth programming and events at the park. The Steelton Skate Park is scheduled to reach construction phase in Spring 2017.

The Borough of Steelton thanks the Dauphin County Commissioners for approving the seed funding needed to make this project a reality.

Steelton Borough saw record turnout for its annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 2^nd.

An estimated 400 members of the community showed up to the event, which featured music, samples of hometown foods from Steelton, dancing, face-painting, skateboarding demonstrations, games, and opportunities for the public to interact with Steelton’s police officers.

Steelton Police Chief, Anthony Minium, stated that event turnout signaled a very promising direction for community policing in Steelton. “Every police officer in our department has worked hard to build bridges in the community. Tonight’s event shows that community policing works and that our residents care as much about us as we do about them.”
